Built in 1653 during the Dutch colonization of Taiwan, Chihkan Tower (赤崁樓), originally known as Fort Provintia, was an outpost on the West Central District of Tainan. The fort was surrendered to Koxinga and destroyed by an earthquake in the 19th century, but rebuilt afterwards. In addition to the site's architectural and artistic significance, it houses a library of dictionaries and business transactions documents in the Siraya language as spoken by native inhabitants of the region during Dutch rule.
